Abstract

This study aims to identify the relationship between the layout of living room furniture and the intensity of verbal communication among family members in standard-type residences in Wanasari Hamlet, RT 01. This study employs a quantitative correlational approach using purposive sampling to select 83 respondents. Data collection was conducted through observation and a questionnaire using a Likert scale. The results indicate that furniture arrangements are predominantly linear and L-shaped, with the primary orientation directed toward the television, resulting in seating positions that do not face each other and limited visual contact. The intensity of verbal communication is high in terms of frequency, but the quality of communication remains functional.  The correlation test results showed a value of r = 0.75 with a significance level of p < 0.05, indicating a strong and significant positive relationship between furniture layout and the intensity of verbal communication. These findings suggest that room configuration is related to the quality of social interaction within the family. Furniture layouts that support interaction orientation and spatial proximity are associated with more intense and meaningful verbal communication. Thus, a behavior-based interior design approach becomes relevant in designing family rooms that are more communicative and human-centered.
