Abstract

The persistent gap in digital literacy among junior high school students has long demanded a practical, classroom-ready solution. Responding to that need, this community service program was carried out at SMPN 1 Banyuputih Situbondo, engaging 12 students as active training participants. Two intertwined problems served as the foundations of this initiative, namely the underutilization of digital tools in mathematics instruction and students’ limited proficiency in operating computer-based applications for academic purposes. A descriptive quantitative framework was adopted as the methodological backbone, with data gathered through field observations, activity documentation, and a Likert-scale evaluation questionnaire. The training sessions were structured beyond mere lecture delivery, incorporating hands-on practice with Microsoft Excel alongside guided assistance as students worked through linear algebra problems. The results obtained were notably encouraging. Most participants responded with enthusiasm, acknowledging that Excel substantially streamlined mathematical computations into a more organized and efficient process. Beyond that, measurable gains in both learning motivation and digital competence were recorded as broader outcomes of the program, reinforcing the argument that spreadsheet-based instruction holds real promise as an effective and contextually relevant model for mathematics education at the junior secondary level.
